The presence of carbon atoms will make the steel stronger than iron but does not prevent it from rusting. In its pure form, iron is soft and generally not useful as an engineering material; the principal method of strengthening it and converting it into steel is by adding small amounts of carbon. The carbon atoms are much smaller than the iron atoms so they are present in between the iron atoms, which is called an interstitial atom.
