RM: How did you first get involved with music? Most of them get bored by it. Did you feel betrayed, by the fact that theyd been looking at other vocalists? At some point, in all our lives, wed all contributed to that star on the ground. Oh no! While I was doing that, David Bowie called and invited me to one of his gigs. So I decided it was time to get rid of that band arid start another one. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. We amalgamate our ideas and that usually gets Craig going. Sopranos is a definite yes. So, yeah. I dont know. They'll tell me, "I think you should simplify it." I delivered what I wanted to do, I hit the notes, I feel good about itbut you dont know how much you used up until tomorrow morning. I didnt have years of being in Santana under my belt, like Neal and Gregg. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. And it was really, really great to see everybody. He plays rhythm guitar and sings it for a while and we just add our parts to it. But nothing really got any hotter. The band is getting better and better, and with everyone writing, I have more opportunities to play different feelings on songs. But they went on to make a lot of money. Theres nobody who plays like Neal Schon, to this day. I've still got a set of vibes at home that I play, but it's not the same. Im just happy to be on the right track now, for once in a row. And it rolls around, and halfway through the song it starts rolling back out. NEAL SCHON: We had run our course doing what we were doing, and what we started out being. I thought in my own mind that before you could even go out there and play, you had to be as good as the people you were listening to on records. I completely understand their reluctance. People trying to sell hot dogs with your music. AD: On. Well, of course, everybody gets burned, but I was like a machine out there. I think thats getting a little into the area of conjecture. AD: I never had any problem. You spend more time counting out the bars than you do listening to the music and understanding it. I love playing. And the bigger drum doesn't give you any more sound on stage. I was in Hawaii. When expanded it provides a list of search options that will switch the search inputs to match the current selection. And I felt that we still had wings, yknow? I didn't have that under my belt. The Waka/Jawakaalbum was an interesting session, just because it was completely off the wall ad-lib. And some funk. It seemed completely right to megiven Tony Sopranos age, he would totally have grown up listening to Journey. We went back, and we started writing Raised on Radio. He was a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, along with Peter Green & John McVie who would form Fleetwood Mac. I think its up to almost 50 million, now. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. At thec morrient, I have Ludwig Rockers underneath, Canasonics on top, and Duralines on the bass drums. Permission was received January, 2001. No way could I tell them that they had just reached the first step and we had a lot more steps to go. They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? The substitute would not know the charts, would not be able to solo or ad-lib or anything else. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. I had very mixed emotions I thought, Heres a good opportunity for me, but under the worst conditions. Asked whether the possibility of being offered the job had occurred to him, he said: Did I have a feeling it was going to go that way? He is a drummer, best known for his work with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, and Journey. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. Its been painful. And its what I really love. But some- times I can just close my eyes and let him ride out awhile. And Ill tell you, to this day, I dont understand what that meant. I have to price myself above that sort of stuff. I got these ProTools sketches of songs, and I guess its time to record some of em. But when you had that conversation, did you get the sense that they thought you were just going out on your own? And I only bring that up to tell you that, at some level, every one of those tracks are like a painting in a gallery to me, and theyre precious to me. RM: Where did you learn traditional grip? When you're first starting out, you have to make a name for yourself, and you don't make a name for yourself by being hidden under the name of something else. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. Lets go fuckin be Journey again. I wouldnt have done that if I had any desire to leave the group. I saw this English rock and roll program where they had three drummers sitting together doing a drum trio, and I got knocked out by what they were doing. You dont seem to understand how much I wanted to sing in that band. Hes saying, yknow, If these guys wanna go on, I think they should just start something new and not use the Journey name. Dont crack the stone is what he kept on saying. Or east of Highland. I believe we were in Hawaii. Oh, most certainly, I was the new kid on the block with them. AD: Sink would be the word. And so I started a long process, seeing many doctors, and the guys got impatient. Because I am gonna get this done, eventually. But I needed to be ready to lay down and do this thing. AD: Three days a week. What happened was wed put out our first record, Journey, and I think we sold a little over 100,000 records. But thats okay. Weve always had a difference of opinion in that area. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. There was no ad-lib with them. So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. AD: No, I haven't. I'm definitely thinking about doing it, but I want to have a plan of approach. **So was that the big strain on your relationshiphis solo career? Now, I'm not playing with the idea filling in a lot, but If I were to go back and play with Zappa, I'd play as much now as I did then because Frank's music creates more freedom. AD: It was sort of progressive rock. **. Eventually I got bored with the screeching sound of the violin. I said Okay, you do what you gotta do, and Ill do what I gotta do. And I hung up the phone, and when the dial tone came back, I called my attorney, and I said Start the divorce. And he said, What divorce? And I said, The divorce. And I told him what happened. I always had the idea in mind that you never go to a big town unless you go with a band. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. I was interested in anything I could get ideas from. I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. Oct. 31, 1999. I just kept my eyes on him all evening. But before that it was ridiculous. I had always sort of planned to go, but I wasnt sure I was gonna go, you know what I mean? Then we'd go out on the road again and when I'd get back, I would have to start over again because I wouldn't have the chance to practice on the road. He has the ability of playing perfectly many different styles: jazz (yes, jazz! Theres a heavy jazz-fusion influence, and none of the songs are as anthemic as Dont Stop Believin or Lights, the songs that would make you famous. And I was not gonna be part of that. To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. So they thought that I would be a good addition to the band. He is the major soloist in the band. The only time in my life I ever did was that time I was forced into it when the rest of the band was at the bar drinking. For about 5 years, every day I'd get out of bed and do exercises, and then I'd do one arm push-ups to pump blood into my arms before I went on stage. You wont catch me in a bar, you wont catch me anywhere around that. They finally gave up and got me one, but by that time it was too late. AD: Sometimes I'll write out something just to remind myself at rehearsal, but I'll usually just remember it. That was the one that had Oh Sherrie on it? Well, disagreements are part of life! I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. But then, the grass is always greener. And sell some records. I thought what they were doing was interesting, but what I didn't realize was that what they tend to do is copy themselves. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. AD: Oh yeah. And so now Ive been sober for the last nine months, and I never want to look back. But the reason I do that is so I can listen back to all the things I played and pick out the parts that worked and sounded good. It's one of those political things, part of the business, and I really shouldn't complain because I've been on a lot of records that have been hits. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. The reunion, thenthat was two years after? It's kind of a long solo about 27 or 28 seconds. That only lasted for six months, because Mayall wanted me to stop playing as much as I was, and become more of a blues drummer. And us being on this mission together, to be the greatest, and write the greatest songs, and come up with great sounds, and fight for the greatest performances. So I did. I imagine it was a really good way to run away from things, for a while. I told him what my deal was and he agreed to it. And, then after that, I continued looking for doctors, maybe hoping Id hear what I wanted to hear. I imagine the band had become a huge business, given all the records youd sold. Dunbar was asked by Kantner to leave in 1982, with Donny Baldwin taking his place in September. I was supposed to talk to him for thirty minutes, but he had a lot to sayabout how he joined the band, about why he left, and about the pride he still takes in the work they did togetherand we ended up talking for almost two hours. But Im sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them. You had millions of fans and sold a ton of records. They were one of the top bands in England at that time. And what that meant was that there was a period of time where I always felt, from Neal, that I had to prove myself worthy of the position I was trying to occupy in the group. RM: What type of music was being played in Liverpool? It's fun while you're there, especially if you're building something you want to build-like a song that you will be performing on stage. I think the beginning of the end was when Neal started his solo career. I stayed with them for about six months, just to help them out because there wasn't really any band around that I could join that could take over from Zappa. We actually never even quit. Its been a love-hate thing. There are different ways you can work it. With the other company that Im a part of, Nocturne [a video-production studio]between that and the residuals that I get, yes, I could live comfortably and just hang it up. AD: No, but Ludwig wants me to start doing clinics. RM: What kind of practicing are you able to do on the road? And no contracts were really binding me to have to be or do anything anymore. Yeah., He knows he wasnt the only drummer considered for the role but he was surprised when Bruce Kulick later told him that one of his heroes, Aynsley Dunbar, had been auditioned and then ruled out. Hearing the music rather than counting it is always the best way. And I just couldnt do it anymore. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. And we did that for about five years, that grueling schedule. Everyone thought I would move back to L.A. , but the Starship required a drummer at that time so I joined them. I was riding my Harley a lot, all throughout the San Joaquin Valley. The music was a mix of instrumental orientated rock-fusion and progressive tunes with vocals. Waka/ Jawaka was also a jazz album. And theyre all good. With what you make off the old stuff, could you afford to retire at this point? I leave a gap on the downbeat and upbeat so if I want to play the snare there, it cuts right through without being diminished by the low-end sound of the bass drum. And I said to Herbie, the manager, I think this is a bad ideathat it would fracture the band on some level. I remember by the end of that tour [pause], feeling musically toasty, feeling emotionally toasty, feeling vocally toasty, and, um, [pause] telling the manager, I just dont want to stay out here and keep doing this. Even while I was doing the solo album, even after it was successfulin my heart of hearts, I was never gonna leave Journey. _[laughs] _Having people love you every night is a beautiful way to run away from things. . I just tune them and that's about it. That doesnt feel too great to me. The more you play, the less they hear. I was also looking after Jeff as far as that was concerned. But the fact that you had thatthats a measure of how big you were. The topic initially came up when Rolie was. And Journey was on tour, so I said Fine, Ill do that. And so I went down and sat with this mastering engineer. Neal did a solo album way before I was thinking about it, with Jan Hammer. [laughs] Please. So I have a lawsuit against them. And Wheel in the Sky. And those were our first singles. So I'm setting up a situation now where I'm going to be wearing headphones and have a live mic in the room, and also have a click track. I had that group The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation] for about three years, and we built a following around the country. I sat in the balcony and had Peter Green and John McVie with him. AD: I left school when I was 15, and immediately formed a trio with a sax player and a keyboard player. If you were to play maybe 8th notes at that point, people could hear it and under- stand it. In a new interview with ABC Audio, Perry reflected. Ronnie Wood paid tribute to former bandmate Jeff Beck, saying he was untouchable when at his best.. Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. And then, there's Cynthia Albritton, known now as Cynthia Plaster Caster, who collects a somewhat different kind of keepsake: plaster molds of famous rock and roll penises. Id had some pain in my left hip area before, but I didnt think nothin about it cause it would come and go. We met in San Rafael, we sat on the edge of the marina, and I just told them, I cant do this anymore. With the smaller drum, I can get a more solid, compact sound, which is better for the audience out front to hear. So everything was really out of date. One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. I was confounded by that. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. So you were always opposed to that stuff? Aynsley Thomas Dunbar was born in Liverpool, England.He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. Oh, yknowtheres no legal issue with talking about him. RM: You did a lot of different styles of music during those three years. All of the toms have both heads, and so do the bass drums. What happened was, I guess Jon and Neal had signed off way before I did. **Do you think you made bad decisions in terms of how you handled things with the band? His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay. As I said in the beginning with you, theres something reverent about that, to me. And he said No, hes gotta do what hes gotta do. It worked out really great. Of all the hits Journey had, why is that the one that seems to resonate the most? We argued over every second of it at one point.
